529 Plans

Using a 529 Plan to Pay Your GW Bill

If you’re using a 529 college savings plan, please follow these steps:

  • Start early: Contact your 529 plan administrator a few weeks before your bill is due as it can take up to 14 days for them to process your request.

  • Include student info: Make sure the payment includes the student’s full name and GWID so it goes to the correct account.

  • Send payments to:

    The George Washington University
    Enterprise Hall, Suite 290
    Attn: Student Accounts Office
    44983 Knoll Square
    Ashburn VA 20147

Tax Forms and 529 Plans

You should not use Form 1098-T to validate Form 1099-Q, Payments from Qualified Education Programs, received from a 529 plan provider. Withdrawals from a 529 plan can be used to pay for certain expenses, such as room and board but, per IRS rules, payments received for these charges cannot be reported in Box 1 of a 1098-T. Instead, use your account statements to show how your 529 funds were used for education expenses.
