Fees & Charges

The student account may include a variety of fees and charges depending on the student's registration and GW activity. The Student Accounts Office bills those charges on behalf of other GW departments. Specific inquiries should be directed to those departments.

Common Charges

These are the most common charges. This list not all-inclusive.

Mandatory Fees

These fees are mandatory, if applicable.

Matriculation Fees: The matriculation fee is a one-time charge for new students. The matriculation fee for undergraduates is $350 and a part of the mandatory enrollment deposit is applied toward this fee. Graduate matriculation fees, when applicable, vary and are determined by each school.

Student Government Association Fee: All main campus students are charged a $3 per credit student association fee for up to 15 credits.

Registration Fee: Off-campus and online programs students are charged a registration fee of $35 per semester.

Course Fees: Your student bill may include course fees for certain classes. Course fees may include art course fees, engineering fees, lab fees, language fees, etc. These fees are a separate line item on your statement. Applicable fees for each course are notated in the Schedule of Classes.

U•Pass Fee: All undergraduate students in the residential colleges are charged a U•Pass fee of $100 per semester (fall/spring only) for unlimited access use of Metrorail and Metrobus.

Proctor Fees: Some off-campus programs contain courses that may include a mandatory proctor fee. Inquiries regarding this fee should be directed to your program.

Opt-in Charges

You can add these charges to your bill from the Make a Payment screen in Student Accounts eBill. These fees cannot be paid via wire at this time.

Library gifts: Select this option to make a tax-deductible donation to the GW libraries. Your donation helps our library system provide online and in-person resources to support your GW experience.

Tuition insurance: GW partners with GradGuard to provide students with the ability to protect your educational investment by reimbursing up to 100% of tuition, room, and board in the event of a medical or mental health withdrawal, based on your level of coverage.

U•Pass Fee: Full-time graduate students, including law, medical and doctoral students, must pre-pay the non-refundable $100 per semester U•Pass fee to participate in the program in the fall and/or spring semesters. Students can pre-pay by selecting from the ‘Additional Items’ menu on the Make a Payment screen in Student Accounts eBill. Please note, the fee will not be covered by any federal loans unless you update your voluntary online authorizations. If, during the semester, your student status changes from full-time to part-time, you will no longer be eligible to participate in the program.

The student account will not include charges for:

  • Fees may be subject to change at any time.
